Change, as they say, is the only constant in life. And few things embody change as profoundly as a layoff from a job. While the initial shock and uncertainty can be daunting, it’s often in these moments of discomfort that long dorment creativity might flourish again! In this blog post, we’ll explore the relationship between stepping out of our comfort zone, experiencing a job loss, and the unexpected surge of creativity that can emerge from such situations.

The Comfort Zone and Creativity

The comfort zone is like a cozy cocoon that keeps us safe, secure, and, well, comfortable. It’s that familiar space where routines are established, risks are minimized, and challenges are well within our control. However, while the comfort zone provides a sense of stability, it can also inadvertently stifle creativity. When we’re comfortable, we tend to stick to tried-and-true methods, avoiding the uncharted territories where innovation often thrives.

The Jolt of a Layoff

Losing a job can feel like a sudden plunge into uncertainty. I was laid off about a month ago, and it brought on so many emotions I haven’t been feeling for a long while. The routine that once defined my days is disrupted, and the future becomes a vast, open landscape. While the initial shock and anxiety are natural reactions, there’s an untapped well of potential within this disruption.

Embracing the Unknown

When we’re pushed out of our comfort zone, we’re forced to adapt, learn, and explore new avenues. This adaptation opens up channels of thinking that were previously dormant. The fear of the unknown transforms into curiosity about what lies ahead, and this curiosity is a breeding ground for creativity. We’re more likely to consider unconventional solutions and approach problems from fresh angles.

For me, I can’t just sit around doing nothing, and I can only apply for so many jobs on a daily basis before going crazy. So I signed up as an Uber driver and started the Arctic Mindset business. Who knows what will come of it all, but I do know I love helping people, and if they feel better from what I can give, then that gives me a great deal of fulfilment! Uber driving is also an excellent way of networking and to get inspiration from so many interesting encounters!

Breaking Routine

A job loss jolts us out of our daily routine. Suddenly, we have extra time and mental space that was previously dedicated to our job. While this transition can be unsettling, it can also be a gift. With fewer commitments tying us down, we can experiment with new hobbies, interests, and projects. This newfound freedom from the shackles of routine encourages us to think beyond our old boundaries and opens up opportunities for creative exploration. I’ve spent much more time with the kids, exploring on our bikes, taking more time to visit their school and being even more involved in all their activities.

Necessity Breeds Innovation

The saying “necessity is the mother of invention” rings true here. A job loss often comes with financial challenges, sparking a need for resourcefulness. Whether it’s finding new ways to cut costs or exploring alternative income sources, these challenges can drive us to think creatively about how to navigate this new terrain. More than anything, I think being laid off has given me a big opportunity to really look deep into what I want to do next. I love the coaching aspect of managing teams and that is something I’ll make sure will be present in a new role whether that is in the tech industry or somewhere else. Another thing I want to make sure is that I don’t put all my eggs in one basket. Suddenly going from a full income to nothing was jarring, so having a few other sources of income is highly useful to reduce the economical stress at the very least!

Remember to take time to feel all the things you’re feeling, it’s a process. Once you give it some time, and keep up healthy routines you go into another mode of thinking where you feel that anything is possible!
